Behind our organization is a myriad of talented associates! We’re excited to kick off a new series highlighting the very people who make A&F Co. such a special place to work.

First up is Dena Phillips, Senior Specialist, New Hire Experience. Dena leads our Leadership Development Program and New Hire Experience at the Global Home Office. Read a little more about her below, then head over to Instagram to tag along on her Day in a #LifeatANF.

  1. Tell us about your career path so far.

I originally thought I wanted to be an attorney, so I studied Political Science and Criminology at Butler University. While there, I had both Criminal Law and Employment Law Internships, but it did not really resonate, so I decided to pivot and try something new.

Upon graduation, I found myself not sure of my career path, so after tapping my network, I began my career as a Talent Acquisition Coordinator in the Tech Industry. Next up, I was an Associate Talent Partner at JD Finish Line before being promoted to Talent Partner. Finally, I joined the Human Resources team at A&F Co. and have been here for almost two years now. I started on the Performance & Development Team and am now on the Recruiting & New Hire Experience Team, where I lead our Leadership Development Program and New Hire Experience!

  1. What does success look like in your job?

We always say that we put the customer at the center of everything we do. In my role, my “customers” are our interns and trainees in the Leadership Development Program, new associates joining our organization, hiring managers and cross-functional partners. Success looks like these “customers” feeling informed and set up to thrive and belong at the company.

If a new associate comes to me after onboarding feeling empowered and like they “have a place around the fire,” I know I’ve done good work.

  1. What gets you out of bed in the morning?

Making an impact truly drives me – whether this is a fresh college graduate deciding on their first benefits plan, a new hire finding a building on campus or cultivating safe spaces to have vulnerable conversations in the Associate Resource Group space, knowing that associates are supported, empowered and engaged is an unmatched feeling.

  1. If you weren’t doing this, what other job or role would you love to pursue?

I could see myself being in real estate! I love making connections and being a part of people’s lives as they achieve their goals, so showing gorgeous houses and making dreams come true sound pretty amazing.

  1. What is your favorite thing to do outside of work?

I love being outside, so whether that’s a walk, reading by the pool, or dinner on a patio, I love all of it.
